Iris R. Hunter, PhD, M.Ed.

Founder, Educator, Advocate for Equity and Empowerment

Iris R. Hunter is a mission-driven entrepreneur, educator, and community strategist with over 25 years of experience helping organizations and individuals lead with purpose and drive meaningful change.

As the Founder and President of AIR Venture Assets, Inc. dba FirstLight Home Care of Springfield, Dr. Hunter led a socially responsible homecare company dedicated to improving the lives of seniors and adults with health challenges. She also led SOE Innovative Enterprises, a consulting firm that empowered nonprofits, corporations, government agencies, and community-based organizations through customized program development, outreach strategy, and equity-centered leadership training.

Dr. Hunter’s passion for education and empowerment is deeply rooted in her upbringing during the Civil Rights Movement in Charleston, South Carolina. That foundation led her to dedicate her career to closing opportunity gaps, advancing social justice, and building stronger communities—one leader, one team at a time.

Her professional journey includes national leadership roles at the American Diabetes Association and Save the Children, where she led high-impact initiatives reaching millions—especially those in historically underserved communities. From creating national diversity strategies to managing federal grants and directing AmeriCorps programs, her work has always centered around building capacity and unlocking human potential.

Leveraging her background as an adjunct professor at George Mason University and a leadership mentor with Catch the Next, Dr. Hunter continues to invest in the next generation of changemakers. Her commitment extends into the community as well through her involvement with the NAACP, Freedom Schools, and other civic leadership initiatives.

Ms. Hunter holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on African American Studies, Women’s Studies, and Adult/Community Education. She also earned a Master’s in Education, a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies, and a BA in Cultural Studies from the University of South Carolina.

Whether she’s guiding frontline caregivers, mentoring emerging leaders, or helping organizations reimagine outreach and inclusion, Ms. Hunter brings a rare blend of lived experience, strategic insight, and heart.
